Bulin 47, From Motorcycle Taxi to Nearly 8 Million Followers: the Dominican Singer Who Conquered the Internet With "Dame Hombro"

Bulin 47 is the stage name of Hanzel Teodoro Vargas Reynoso, a dembow singer and rapper from Capotillo, a neighbourhood in Santo Domingo. At the start of October, Europe had never heard of him. Then content creator Kevin Vai filmed him outside a nightclub in Madrid's Embajadores district, the clip exploded, and social media filled up with AI-made parodies - including ones featuring footballer Erling Haaland.

On 7 October the two released the song "Dame Hombro". Today Bulin 47 has almost 8 million followers on Instagram, Rosalía among them. That is what fame looks like in 2026: you aren't discovered by a producer in a studio, you're discovered by a creator with a phone outside a club.

But behind the viral dance lies a childhood with no fairy tales. His biological mother left him with his father and with Mercedes, the woman who raised him and whom he considers his real mother. He says he has forgiven his birth mother. His father died when Bulin was 12, after the family moved to Maimón to get the boy out of Capotillo. He later went back there anyway.

He dropped out of school in his second year of secondary school, against his father's wishes, as he said in a 2017 interview. He drove a motorcycle taxi and delivered food, earning at best about 800 Dominican pesos a day. The music started in the barbershop of his friend Macaco Flow, where a recorded improvisation spread online. Nicky Jam shared one of his videos, and then came collaborations with El Alfa, Arcángel and Myke Towers.

The story hasn't been scrubbed of its dark parts either. He himself has talked about a gambling addiction, especially to slot machines and dice, which he says he has overcome. In a New York hotel he was robbed at gunpoint, a few hours before a shoot with Arcángel. They took jewellery and a watch that he himself valued at about 360,000 dollars.

Today he has a partner, Nadia Félix, who helps him with his finances and career, and a daughter, Hanna Victoria, born in February 2024. He says he gives between 20 and 30 percent of his concert earnings to people in need. That is a figure you rarely hear from the stage. How many stars back home would say it publicly?
