The reason is not scouting vision but injuries: right now Virgil van Dijk is the only experienced centre-back in the squad. The alternative was Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, but a price tag of 60 million pounds killed that story. Araujo's numbers from last season are what split the fans into two camps - across the five strongest European leagues he sits in only the third percentile for defensive duels won, which is catastrophic for a player of his standing. Real Madrid have completed the transfer of Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a fee that could reach 120 million pounds (140 million euros), on a seven-year deal. The boy is 19. In the same window Barcelona offered 38.5 million pounds for Rodri and were turned down; City want over 60 million, even though the Spaniard's contract expires in June 2027 and they could lose him for nothing next summer. This is football economics in a single frame: a teenager without a single trophy costs three times more than the Ballon d'Or holder.

Vinicius stayed until 2032, Arsenal was left without a plan B

The saga ended the way most sagas end - with a signature exactly where the player already was. Vinicius Junior has signed a new long-term contract with Real Madrid and stays at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2032. Shkendija Arachinovo and Sileks: two penalties, VAR and a historic point in Chair

Toshevski moves to Kosovo - a route that has long been more natural than the domestic one

Former Macedonian international Kristijan Toshevski is a new player at Kosovo's Ferizaj, after finishing his spell at Pogradec in Albania.
