Fifty seconds that were supposed to sound like a meeting

Footage from a crowded space, hands in pockets, an ambassador in sportswear in the background. That is the material the government presented as confirmation of the strategic partnership with Washington, and which the opposition called a trip at taxpayers' expense. There was a conversation - nobody disputes that. The question is why a brief contact with a US secretary of state has to be packaged with a weight it does not carry, when the formal meeting with the deputy secretary, with protocol and a statement, arrived the very next day. In the same week the State Department notified Congress that it was redirecting 52 million dollars of military aid away from Macedonia and three other countries towards Latin America. That figure can be verified. The fifty seconds cannot.

Eighteen months, then back to page one

"That's not my job." Five words spoken outside the entrance of the Kočani nightclub, now among the heaviest ever heard in the Skopje criminal court. The trial of the 13 police officers started over - not because of new evidence, but because the composition of the panel changed. Witnesses described asking for help for an injured young man and being refused. The next hearing is on 13 October. For the court that is procedure; for the parents sitting in the hall, it is one more lap.

Diesel overtook petrol, while crude falls

From midnight a litre of eurodiesel costs 104.50 denars, up 5.50 denars and now more expensive than either petrol, both of which get cheaper by 1.50 denars. At the same time crude oil is falling for a third consecutive day. Both statements are true, because the regulator does not look at crude but at the five-day average of refined diesel on the Mediterranean market - a different product with its own dynamics. For the driver it means a full 50-litre tank costs 275 denars more overnight.

The cameras recorded the attack being prepared

At a polyclinic in Karpoš, in the middle of working hours, a gynaecologist was attacked in his own surgery and ended up with a fractured second cervical vertebra. Several days earlier two women in white coats taped over the cameras, and before that the internet cable had been cut. The cameras kept recording anyway and captured precisely those two. The interior ministry responded with one sentence: that a 56-year-old reported an assault and that measures are being taken. Nothing about a detention, nothing about the footage. This is not some outskirt - it is a public facility in the centre of the capital, with video evidence in the institutions' hands.

When a government cannot convince its own

In Pehčevo, VMRO-DPMNE councillors voted against rezoning land for their own government's data centre, and minister Andonovski took their side: there was no project, no study, no figure for how many megawatts the facility would draw. That is not a rebellion, it is an admission that the item reached the agenda without documents. The national data centre, meanwhile, is announced near the free economic zones for around 20 million euros, with a foundation stone next year. In parallel, SDSM claims a 13.2 million euro contract for EVN's electricity meters ended up with a firm linked to the energy minister.

Skopje measures its cubic metres

The city is counting today: 650 cubic metres of waste cleared in one week, 170 of them in Čair alone. The clearing repeats because it is the only thing that gets done. In Centar, meanwhile, a second emergency rat cull in two months has begun, with the mayor himself admitting it does not solve the problem. One piece of news goes the other way: bus line 35 is being extended to Radišani and Butel finally gets a direct link to Aerodrom, on trial for now. And a brawl at Skopje airport, where the ministry confirmed the footage but did not even say where exactly it happened.

A stone the state is branding without having defined it

"Macedonian ruby does not exist right now, it is not defined anywhere" - the state is branding the stone it left without a legal framework for years. In Ohrid, meanwhile, the city is car-free for two hours today, and the question about cycle lanes is still there after 1pm. And Gaši explains that his support for the convicted KLA leaders was a personal opinion - even though a parliament speaker has no personal profile.

Beyond the borders

Russia's elections gave United Russia 57.48 percent and 208 of 225 districts - a result that confirms rather than decides. In Hungary, Orbán is calling for national resistance after five months of silence, while his party holds 141 of 199 seats. In Germany, the CDU fell below the threshold in Mecklenburg for the first time. Latvia raised an air alert with no explanation, and America is returning to Greenland with two Cold War bases. In Serbia a cardiologist tops the student list, and the tabloids have already gone after him. And Mercedes told its workers: longer hours for the same money, or we close plants.

Sport and the rest of the day

Macedonian handball showed both the top and the bottom in one weekend - Ohrid defends a European trophy, Tikveš was knocked out by a club from Luxembourg. Šeško and Xhaka dropped out in the same week, which means Macedonia's two strongest rivals enter the Nations League without their leaders. And LeBron signed for eight million dollars while MZT Skopje complains about the three-foreigners rule.

The day leaves the same line running through the harder part: institutions know how to announce, to brand and to package, but when it comes to a document, a figure or an answer with a first name and a surname, one sentence is what remains. Or fifty seconds.
