Sarah Jessica Parker at 61 in Wooden Clogs: the Shoes Fashion Sold to 20-Somethings Have Reached Manhattan

Sarah Jessica Parker was photographed in Manhattan on 21 October, on the set of the sequel to "The Family Stone". A floral midi dress, a classic grey coat, a pearl necklace - and on her feet, black clogs with a chunky wooden sole and a platform. Shoes that fashion magazines until yesterday associated with 20-year-olds, worn by a woman of 61.

Clogs are nothing new. The bohemian style of the seventies put them everywhere, and before that the wooden sole was a worker's shoe. In the Balkans, anyone who has seen the wooden nanule sandals in an old hammam remembers it. Fashion has a strange habit: what the poor once wore, half a century later it sells as luxury.

The current wave started in 2024, when the fashion house Chloé brought clogs back to the runway. At the Chloé show that September, Anna Wintour and Sienna Miller sat in the front row. Two years on, the trend isn't fading: at Chloé's spring-summer 2027 show in Paris on 1 October, model Taylor Hill walked out in platform clogs.

Why now? Stylists pitch them as a practical replacement for sandals and wedge espadrilles once temperatures drop. A closed toe, a high sole, and still a light look. Parker showed something else too: with pearls and a classic coat, clogs stop looking like festival footwear.

And there's the real message of this look. For years the industry has split trends by the age of the buyer - this is for twenty, this is for fifty. Parker broke that split with a single step on the pavement. The question is whether we'll buy the shoes because they suit us, or because Carrie Bradshaw wore them?
