When oil passes a hundred dollars a barrel, the news stops being distant. Saudi Arabia has shut its East-West pipeline after missiles struck the key pumping infrastructure - the same pipeline through which Riyadh rerouted around five million barrels a day once the Strait of Hormuz effectively stopped functioning as a trade route.

Two US officials confirmed that preliminary analysis shows damage to pumping stations along the pipeline itself. Satellite images from Friday record a serious fire at one facility, and from Thursday a smaller fire and thick black smoke at another location. How badly the pipeline itself is damaged - nobody is saying yet. How long the repair will take - also not.

Nobody claims responsibility, but everyone knows where to look

Officially, the attacker is unknown. Unofficially, one of the officials claims the drones took off from Iraq. That is neither a new nor a surprising address: last June, pro-Iranian armed groups from Iraq already attacked the same pipeline, which runs over 1,200 kilometres. Analyst Behnam Ben Taleblu of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies points out these militias have long used drones against Saudi Arabia - a model in which Tehran applies pressure through proxies, and the hand pulling the trigger is never its own.

That is a military doctrine the Balkans recognise without translation. Somebody else pulls the trigger, and the official spokesman shrugs and asks for evidence.

The numbers that explain the panic

Saudi Arabia is the world's second-largest oil producer, right behind the US. The attack came just as Riyadh reported to OPEC that production last month had fallen to its lowest level since 1990. A few days earlier, pro-Iranian militias seized a strategic Yemeni port city, and the Houthis announced attacks on all Saudi vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. The maritime outlet to the Red Sea, via the port of Yanbu, is the next link that could snap.

That is why the price of crude jumped past 100 dollars a barrel this week. That is not market speculation - that is a market reading a map.

Silence as an answer

The Saudi government, state-owned Aramco, the US State Department, the White House and Central Command - all declined to comment. Five addresses, not one sentence. When that many institutions simultaneously have nothing to say about damaged infrastructure the global market depends on, the silence is a statement in itself.

The one consoling detail comes from the engineers: repairing a pumping station is far simpler than repairing a ruptured pipeline. So for now, the damage is fixable. The question that remains is not whether they will repair this one - but how many more times they will have to.
