If you're moving through central Skopje today, brace for jams. From today (20 July) until 23 July, India's President, Droupadi Murmu, is on an official visit to Macedonia - and with her comes a special traffic regime on the roads across the wider city centre.

Skopje police say the Road Traffic Safety Unit will put special-regime measures in place for the duration of the visit. The appeal to drivers is simple: obey the orders of the uniformed officers who will be directing traffic on the ground.

A state visit of this rank means closed intersections, rerouted traffic and queues where there usually aren't any - the classic Skopje scene every time a high guest lands in the city. For three days, part of the centre will move to the guest's motorcade, not to the traffic lights.

A tip for anyone who doesn't have to cross the centre these days: take the ring road or set off early. And if you're already stuck in a standstill while the motorcade rolls by - at least you'll have a story: the day India's president blocked your route to work.
