34 fires in 24 hours: three still burning, and the warnings put out nothing

The most concrete thing to come out of the courtroom in the "State Lottery" case was not a single piece of testimony, but two numbers moving in opposite directions. Prosecutors raised the damage from around 8.2 to around 9.7 million euros, and at the same time changed the legal classification from embezzlement to abuse of office. The first carries at least four to twenty years in prison. The second, one to five.
Prosecutor Daniel Kocev did not try to hide it: the classification changed because they failed to secure evidence for embezzlement. That is a principled answer and it deserves to be said out loud. The question that remains is a different one - why, after nearly two years of investigation, the evidence for the heavier offence is not there. Asked whether he felt guilty, Artan Grubi answered briefly: "No." The hearing collapsed for another reason anyway - the eighth defendant said he had not received the indictment in Albanian, and the judge had no choice but to adjourn.
A 26-year-old was shot dead in Čair, less than a hundred metres from a police station. Interior Minister Pance Toskovski then said something on camera that calls for an administrative report, not an investigation: one of the perpetrators was already serving a prison sentence. Who signed, when, and on what grounds is a question with a date and a signature on it, not one that needs an early investigative phase.
The same day, the interior ministry announced that twenty drivers without licences had been detained in two days, the youngest fourteen. The stepped-up checks are real, but a check is the end of the chain. Someone handed over the keys earlier.
At a press conference about the concert marking 35 years of independence, a journalist asked the organiser how much the budget-funded contract was worth. The answer was "Do I look like an idiot to you?" and a referral to the government. Formally, it is true that budget decisions are the government's. But a contract has two sides, and the second one was standing at the microphone. The journalists' association responded with an official letter. The sum is still unknown.
Skopje is buying 3,300 containers at 9,600 denars each. The previous ones, according to mayor Orce Gjorgjievski, cost over 18,000 denars apiece, and over the past twelve years the city bought roughly 1,300 in total. The announcement is written as a success and partly it is. But the same comparison raises a question nobody asked: if identical goods can be bought for half the price, what exactly was happening in the earlier procurements.
In Kumanovo, the mayor apologised to residents over the rubbish and announced five new refuse trucks. The trucks are real. The utility company that has been broke for decades is still waiting for somebody else to do the buying.
Diesel jumped to 101 denars a litre, but the biggest increase in absolute terms is the one nobody is talking about - extra light heating oil rose by eight denars to 105. That is the fuel a share of households heat with through winter, and the increase took effect on 8 September itself.
A day earlier, statistics showed August inflation at 2.6 percent, the first rise after four months of decline, with recreation up 8.8 percent year on year. Part of August's calm came precisely from cheaper transport - which as of today no longer holds. In the same economy, construction work reached 242 million euros in a single quarter. The growth comes from projects set up in 2024, which means the curve depends on what follows once they finish.
The opposition SDSM said around 250 children with disabilities started the school year without an assistant. The education ministry said a record 1,524 assistants are employed. Both numbers can be true at once - one measures how many are employed, the other how many are missing. Neither statement says how many children are waiting, or for how long, and that is the only figure that means anything to a parent.
Bitola has a similar gap, where the university is opening a second enrolment round with 1,288 free places, most of them at the Technical Faculty. Empty desks are not distributed at random.
At an independence panel, President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova said a functioning democracy takes sixty years and that Macedonia is halfway there. The statement is comfortable and uncomfortable in equal measure - it leaves room, but it also concedes that thirty-five years were not enough.
Meanwhile, all three firefighting aircraft the state owns were scrambled for a single fire near "Jasen", in a week with more than forty fires. When one fire line ties up the entire air fleet, that tells you nothing about the size of the fire.
Russian ballistic missiles hit Kyiv as soon as the American negotiators left, and Poland scrambled its jets. After talks with Witkoff and Kushner, Zelensky left one sentence behind - they are preparing for another winter of war. In Germany, the AfD took 43.8 percent in Saxony-Anhalt and the first message after the win was that sanctions on Russia have to go. And Plenkovic called out Brussels directly for reacting too weakly to Mladic's funeral.
Vardar are back in the handball Champions League, starting at home against Nantes, with the EHF announcing it using archive footage from 2017 and 2019. The football Vardar, meanwhile, won 2-0 in front of stands that emptied - a new coach, a winning start and a boycott, all in one evening.
If today leaves anything behind, it is that in the heavier half of the news every number has a signature under it. An expert assessment calculated the damage, somebody approved the container price, a budget approved the concert fee. Not one of them appeared on its own.
