The University Clinic for Urology has officially opened its new operating theatres - a surgical complex built and equipped, as the clinic puts it, to the highest world standards.
The clinic says the new space brings better conditions for surgical interventions, greater safety for patients, higher quality procedures and modern working conditions for medical staff.
The first operation in the new theatres
As a symbolic start, the first operations to implant inflatable penile prostheses were performed - one of the most advanced and most complex procedures for treating erectile dysfunction. That intervention recently became available within public healthcare too.
That detail matters more than the theatre itself. A procedure that until now meant a private clinic and a bill out of your own pocket is now entering the system the citizen already pays for through contributions. That is a concrete change, not a press release.
What is missing from the announcement
There is no figure. Not how much the investment cost, not where the funds came from, not how many theatres were opened, not how many operations a year are expected in them. The phrase „highest world standards” is repeated in every version of the story, and on its own it means nothing measurable - it is a phrase, not a certificate.
When it comes to a public health institution, those numbers are not a detail for the curious. They are how you check whether the investment is a good one. Equipment built to world standard and bought at a world price is one thing; the same equipment bought at three times the price is quite another. Without a budget line, the difference is invisible.
And yet
This is a story worth reading positively, and without irony. A state clinic is opening modern theatres and bringing a procedure into public healthcare instead of leaving it to the private market. That is exactly what public healthcare is supposed to do.
The question is whether this is the start of systematic investment or a one-off event with photographs. The answer comes with the next clinic - and with whether there, too, there is something more than a press release.
