Monica Naranjo, one of the most recognisable voices of Spanish pop music over the past three decades, opened the doors to photographers at her villa in Maresme, Catalonia. The residence carries the name „Villa Naranjo" - 3,000 square metres of land, 900 square metres of living space spread over three floors, and a style that mixes Mediterranean classics with unembarrassed theatricality.
First impression - a minimalist white facade with a decorative metal fence. A curving pool. An outdoor lounging area with low-set seating in neutral tones. Up to here it is „a wealthy Catalan home" - standard for the region.
But inside is a different film. Giant Buddha statues in the main living room - not one, several. All with soft lighting from above, as in a temple. In the master bedroom - a theatrical neo-baroque setting with a gilded headboard in diamond patterns. A stage, not a bedroom for sleeping. Which fits - Monica Naranjo is a singer whose stage presence has always been the centre of her brand. It would not feel authentic if the bedroom were Scandinavian minimalism.
Still, there is a space where she chooses silence. The zen meditation room with a „wabi-sabi" philosophy - natural materials, low seating, simplicity. Coarse fabrics, ceramics from Japan, candles for aromatherapy. This is not part of the photo session - it is the room she retreats to when she does not want to be on stage.
The house also has a private music studio, with a soundproofed space and top-tier equipment. That is the most practical part of the property for her as a professional - the ability to work at home without needing a studio in Barcelona. In addition: several bedrooms, each with its own walk-in closet, and display cases with music awards prominently placed.
What can be learned from Villa Naranjo? That interior design does not have to be coherent from entrance to exit. Different spaces for different functions - theatre where you need theatre, silence where you need silence. The Balkans often make the mistake in the opposite direction: a designer tape running through the whole flat, with the same materials from hallway to bathroom. The result: homes that look good in photos but have no soul. Monica chose soul.
