The final of the Youth EHF EURO U20 in Cluj-Napoca had everything - leads, turnarounds, overtime. Hungary won its first title at this competition, beating Sweden 34:32 after overtime. The Swedes went up by three goals and led at halftime (16:15), but the Hungarians didn't give up. When the score was 21:21, every goal and every mistake mattered. Three minutes from the end Sweden led 28:26, but Máté Fazekas equalized thirty seconds before the buzzer and dragged the game into overtime. There, with key saves from goalkeeper Balog, Hungary sealed the win 34:32. A game like this isn't forgotten easily.
In the third-place game, Slovenia beat Denmark 30:28 and took bronze - its fourth in the history of this competition. The Slovenes started strong, with a 5:0 run and an eight-goal lead (11:3), carried by their defense and goalkeeper Mlakar. The Danes came back and three minutes from the end trailed by just one goal, but Mlakar's final save left them with nothing. Another Balkan team on the podium of a European championship - a reminder that handball from these parts is at world level, and not by accident.
The tournament's all-star team counts ten names across seven positions, and the award for most valuable player (MVP) went to Swedish center back Liam Hultberg, who scored 52 goals despite the silver. The tournament's top scorer is the Latvian sharpshooter Valdis Kalniņš with an incredible 104 goals. Numbers that show this generation has something to boast about - and something worth following in the years to come.
And here's news that concerns us directly: Macedonia will host the Junior World Championship (U21) in handball in 2027. With the European tournament wrapped up, the last spots have filled in too - a total of 15 national teams have already secured their route to Macedonia, among them Sweden, Hungary, Denmark, Slovenia, France, Germany, Spain, Norway and Romania. A major championship on home soil is a rare chance - and a big responsibility. The question is whether the arenas, the organization and the support will rise to the moment. There's time until 2027, but time, as usual, passes faster than we think.
Bitola back on the European stage. Eurofarm Pelister will be the only Macedonian representative in the European League this season and landed in an interesting group - against La Rioja, Wybrzeże Gdańsk and Gummersbach. The EHF released the schedule: the group phase starts on September 29/30 and ends on December 1, with Pelister opening at home against La Rioja. Germany's Gummersbach is the biggest name in the group, but a European duel in Bitola always means a packed hall. In parallel, the men's cadets (U18) posted two wins over Greece in their build-up to the European - a young generation already learning how to beat the neighbor.
