Shakira returned to Spain after eight years, and she did not do it with one concert but with a twelve-night residency. The first was held on 18 September at Iberdrola Music in Madrid, opening the closing run of the "Las mujeres ya no lloran" tour. Twelve nights in one place is something entirely different from a tour - it is a model in which the audience travels to the performer, not the other way round.
"Welcome to my European residency. I can't believe I'm here. It feels like a dream," she told the crowd at the start. Later she added that it was "an enormous proof of love and affection" and that there is nothing like the she-wolf finding her pack. That is her image for the relationship with her audience, and she has carried it for several years now.
The setlist worked backwards - the early Latin hits, "La bicicleta", through to the 2023 collaboration with Bizarrap and the newer songs about independence. She entered the stage along "Camino de la Loba", the she-wolf's path, accompanied by the group of dancers waiting above. Choreography, multiple costume changes, the whole machinery you expect when a ticket costs what it costs.
But the most striking part was not the stage. The space around it was turned into a temporary Latin American city called Macondo - with pavilions functioning as separate venues. A stadium for 55,000 people, a museum dedicated to her career, a library of Latin American literature, a merchandise area, a design and fashion workshop, a food market and a dedicated children's zone. The opening also featured Guitarricadelafuente, Portuguese singer Maro, the band Santos Bravos and a DJ, while Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada staged a fashion show.
This is no longer a concert. It is a destination - a place you go to, spend a day at and spend money at ten different points before you even hear the first song. The industry came up with this because selling music has not paid for a long time, and experience does. And it works: Diego Simeone was in the audience with his wife.
When a performer of this rank decides to be in one place twelve times instead of in twelve places once, regions without that kind of infrastructure stop being a stop on a tour and become an audience that travels. Madrid got twelve nights. Everyone else got a ticket link and a plane fare.
