Barcelona Crush Füchse Berlin in Cologne for Their 12th Champions League Title

In a sold-out arena in Cologne, at the Final Four, Barcelona showed once again why they're the biggest name in European handball. The Catalans beat Füchse Berlin 37:34 and won their 12th title in the Champions League - a record no one else even comes close to. The key was goalkeeper Emil Nielsen, who in the first 24 minutes racked up 8 saves at an incredible 42 percent success rate and set the pace. Berlin closed the gap to two goals a few times, but never levelled. The irony is that Nielsen leaves for Veszprém in a few days - he handed Barça their last trophy, then packs his bags for the competition.

Gidsel Scored 161 Goals and Broke a Record a Decade Old

Despite the loss, Mathias Gidsel walked out of this season into the history books. The Dane from Füchse Berlin scored 161 goals in a single Champions League season - a new record that broke the old mark of 141 goals set by his compatriot Mikkel Hansen in 2015/16. At the Final Four alone he added another 9 goals in the semifinal and 8 in the lost final. But the man didn't want to hear about individual glory: „I'm sad that we lost and that's the only feeling right now. I'd trade this award for the big trophy." A goal machine who still knows handball is played for the team, not for the stats.

Domen Makuc Named MVP of the Final Four Before His Move to Kiel

The award for most valuable player went to Domen Makuc, Barcelona's Slovenian playmaker. The 25-year-old ace scored 5 goals in both the semifinal and the final, leaving one last mark before moving to Germany's THW Kiel. „It means a lot to be MVP, but this is a team performance - many in my team deserve to get the award," Makuc said modestly. A Balkan neighbour at the top of Europe - the Slovenian became the fourth Barça player with this honour. The region proved once again that in handball it's never an extra.

A Dream Transfer: Iva Mladenovska Is the Newest Member of Borussia Dortmund

And here at home there's news worth shouting louder. Macedonian handball player Iva Mladenovska is the newest member of Borussia Dortmund, the German runners-up - a dream transfer for any player from the region. While the foreign media trumpet million-euro men's transfers, one of our girls quietly earned her place in one of the strongest women's clubs in Europe. That's not luck, it's years of work no one filmed. Next time someone says nothing comes out of Macedonia, remind them of this name.

Macedonia Will Host the European Championship for Players Under 18

And one more piece of good news from home soil: Macedonia will host the European Handball Championship for players under 18. Hosting isn't just logistics and cost - it's a chance for our young players to play in front of their own crowd, on their own soil, against the best Europe has at that age. Competitions like these are where future national-team players are born, and a well-run tournament builds the confidence that the country can carry something big. The question is whether the institutions will use it as a beginning or just as a photo op.
