"I started dieting when I was five." The sentence belongs to Hilaria Baldwin, spoken in an interview on the first of August, and it is not a metaphor. Five years old. The age at which a child learns to tie shoelaces, not to count calories.
She is 42 today and has seven children. Behind her stand nearly two decades in which, as she puts it, she went through everything - anorexia, bulimia, bingeing, undereating. She reels off the list like someone naming cities they have passed through, not diagnoses.
The detail that tells the whole story
One thing from her account sticks: she was afraid of how many calories toothpaste might contain. Not cake, not dinner - toothpaste. At that point it is no longer about appearance or vanity. It is about a mind that has turned every single thing into a threat.
She also says the thing people around such cases rarely grasp: looking back at old photographs, she saw herself as normal. But at the moment those photographs were taken, she felt like a whale. So the problem was never in the mirror.
"I could not have good relationships"
She describes the most concrete cost like this: she was not happy, she could not build relationships or friendships, and she could not go out to dinner. That is the part that appears in no statistic. The disorder does not only take your body - it takes the dinners with people, the casual lunches, the entire social web that keeps a person upright.
With her own children she says she is trying to do it differently: instead of rules and bans, she gives them tools and asks one question - how do you feel after eating? Healthy, for her today, means not focusing on weight but on how she feels, on strength and on health.
It sounds simple. But try saying that to our grandmothers, who have spent decades building love on a plate, or to the generation that grew up with comments about their weight at the family table. That is where the first lessons about food are learned, long before anyone opens a calorie-counting app.
