Queen Camilla has spoken for the first time about what she kept hidden for weeks. On 31 January 2024 she opened a new Maggie's centre at the Royal Free Hospital in London, shook hands with cancer patients and talked with their families. She already knew her husband had cancer. The public found out five days later.
„I remember coming to Maggie's just after the King had been diagnosed. At that moment nobody was allowed to say anything. It was pretty hard,\" she says in a seven-minute video filmed for the charity's thirtieth anniversary.
The scene is almost impossible to picture. A woman walking through rooms where people are dealing with the hardest news of their lives, carrying the very same news in her pocket with no right to say it out loud. „I badly wanted to say it, but obviously I couldn't.\" On that same visit, she says, she caught herself questioning patients differently than usual: „I was almost interrogating them. I didn't want to dig too deep. Usually when I go in, I just talk to them. But this time it was much deeper.\"
Buckingham Palace announced that Charles III had cancer on 5 February 2024. The King, now 77, is still receiving treatment, but late last year said his treatment schedule had been reduced - which he called „a personal blessing\". He returned to public duties in April 2024, less than three months after starting treatment.
Camilla has her own comment on that pace, and it is not especially wrapped up: „Look at my husband. Nothing stopped him. He simply said: 'That's who I am. I'll deal with this.'\" Defending yourself from fear with work - families who have never seen the inside of a palace know that model too.
The most honest sentence in the video is the one where the queen admits her role flipped overnight. „We had never experienced it that close up, at home, and suddenly your husband is diagnosed with this, and you think: 'My God, I've been talking to all these people, and now I'm the one with a family member to care for, and I have to try to understand everything.'\"
Maggie's has 27 centres across the United Kingdom, built in the grounds of major cancer hospitals, and they operate free of charge, with no appointment and no referral. Camilla has been their president since 2008 and in the video calls for every hospital to have such a centre. She singles out men, who according to the charity find it hardest to ask for help.
The monarchy rarely talks about illness, and when it does, it is usually a three-sentence statement. This is something else - and it is no accident that it comes out exactly when the organisation the queen patronises needs attention. The question is not whether the feeling is genuine. The question is why it took more than two years to say it.
