Djokovic Reveals After His Defeat What Has Been Happening to Him for Years: „It Causes Me a Lot of Problems When There Is Humidity and Heat”

Novak Djokovic lost in Cincinnati to Thiago Agustín Tirante - a 25-year-old Argentine, ranked fiftieth in the world, for whom this is the biggest win of his career. That in itself is second-tier news. What happened afterwards is not.

In the second set Djokovic called for medical assistance. Severe dehydration, breathing problems, exhaustion from the heat, back pain. And when he was asked what was going on, the man who spent twenty years refusing to talk about his own body - spoke.

„It was not a pleasant match for me. It is because of a health problem I have. I have suffered from it for many years. It causes me a lot of problems, especially when there is high humidity and heat,” he said.

A statement that waited many years

Note exactly what he said. He did not say he felt unwell once. He said it has gone on for years, that it is chronic, and that humid air triggers it. So every match where he looked „too dramatic”, every withdrawal they read as acting, every raised palm towards his box that the stands whistled at - all of it had a different backdrop than the one pinned on him.

And how many times they pinned it. Djokovic is the player who has been accused for longest of exaggerating when he calls for a doctor. Twenty years of a reputation built on the fact that he never explained. Now that he has explained, it deserves to be heard more seriously than any forecast about whether he will play in New York.

What comes next

He is 39. He returned to Cincinnati after a three-year break - he won the title there in 2023. His previous match was on 10 July, the Wimbledon semi-final against Jannik Sinner. So his body did not withstand the break, and the calendar he trimmed himself in order to catch only the big tournaments is now working against him, because he arrives on court short of match play.

The goal has not changed since the start of his career: a twenty-fifth Grand Slam title, at the US Open in late August. Asked whether he would be ready, he answered without decoration: „I hope I will be able to, but unfortunately right now it looks more likely that I will not.”

Tennis is a sport that demands an athlete perform like a machine and then holds it against him when he behaves like a human being. Djokovic has now said he has a condition he has lived with for years. Which of those who laughed at his medical timeouts will speak up now?
