Copenhagen Fashion Week is not Paris and does not want to be. On the street there, nobody wears spectacle - they wear outfits that survive a normal day. This season produced seven things that recurred often enough to count as a trend - and, more importantly, six of them already exist in the average Macedonian wardrobe.
1. Stripes
Striped trousers are staying exactly where they were. This time the stripe climbed onto shirts, skirts, bags and shoes too. It works because it is a pattern that does not demand the rest of the outfit adapt to it.
2. Grey takes over the role of the neutral
Black and white remain safe, but this season handed the lead role to grey. Depending on the fabric and the finish, grey can change an outfit completely - from workwear to evening, with the same pieces. That is a cheaper change than any new purchase.
3. Fringing
Fringing came back via scarves resembling traditional shawls, tied around the waist, but also on bags, blouses and skirts. They add movement to an otherwise still outfit. If you have an inherited fringed shawl in some chest, know that Copenhagen declared it a trend yesterday.
4. Capri trousers and balloon trousers
Mid-calf trousers continue strongly, and alongside them came the wider, looser balloon cut. The difference is in the shape: capri sits stricter, balloon gives volume and copes better with heat.
5. Red
The colour of the season. It works both as a detail - a bag, a shoe - and as a full look. The Copenhagen street confirmed that red almost never misses.
6. Asymmetry and mixed lengths
Long shirts and tees, skirts short at the front and longer at the back, unexpected cuts. Playing with length works both casually and for dressier occasions. This is the only trend on the list that takes a little courage - not because it is difficult, but because it asks you not to look like everybody else.
7. Sheer fabrics with shine
Sheerness returned through pieces with shine and fine detailing. To keep it from tipping over, in Copenhagen they paired them with a classic shirt - the contrast keeps the outfit balanced.
What is worth more than the list
What sets the Copenhagen street apart from other fashion weeks is not creativity, but the base. A white shirt, clean trousers, comfortable sandals - and then one unexpected proportion, one detail or one accent of colour. That is a recipe that does not require a budget, it requires an eye.
And here is the good news for anyone who every season looks at lists demanding new pieces: of these seven trends, at least four are decisions about combining, not about buying. The question is not what you are missing, but how long it has been since you opened the wardrobe intending to actually look.
