The ancient stages are running without a break

The Ancient Theatre in Ohrid and Heraclea in Bitola are running almost without a break this year. In the same week that Elena Andonovska sings in honour of Vaska Ilieva, Zeljko Samardzic performs in Bitola, and a few days later Simon Trpceski sits down at the piano in Ohrid. That is not the schedule of a small market.

What is actually happening

Elena Andonovska plays the Ancient Theatre in Ohrid on 4 August, with a programme titled „From Macedonia to Foreign Lands” dedicated to Vaska Ilieva. Zeljko Samardzic, a name that has filled Balkan halls for decades, is at Heraclea in Bitola on 7 August. Simon Trpceski, the pianist with an international career, performs at the Ancient Theatre on 13 August.

Skopje waits for September

The gap between summer in the southwest and summer in Skopje is visible. While Ohrid and Bitola fill their ancient stages almost every night, the Skopje calendar stays empty until 8 September, when David Guetta arrives at the Tose Proeski Arena. It is the biggest name coming to the country this year, and also a reminder that the capital has no summer stage to match Ohrid's.
