Ukraine attacked the Russian republic of Dagestan overnight. Fires broke out at the port infrastructure in Makhachkala and at the theatre building, said Dagestan's governor, Fyodor Shchukin. According to him the fires were quickly extinguished and there are no casualties or injuries.
Makhachkala is not on the front. It is on the Caspian Sea - on the opposite side of Russia from Ukraine, across the entire Caucasus. It is the geography that makes this different from the hundreds of shot-down-drone statements issued every morning.
Russian aviation authorities imposed restrictions overnight at the airports in Makhachkala, Vladikavkaz and Grozny because of the Ukrainian drone attacks.
448 drones in twelve hours
The Russian defence ministry announced that air defences intercepted and destroyed 448 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones between 20:00 on 9 September and 08:00 on 10 September Moscow time.
According to the same statement, the drones were downed over the Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Rostov and Tula regions, over Dagestan, Kalmykia, Crimea and the Krasnodar region, and over the waters of the Caspian and Black Seas.
That is a figure Moscow publishes itself - and it is worth reading twice. If 448 really were shot down, then that many were sent, which by itself says what scale we are dealing with. And if they were not all shot down, then the statement says even more.
Why the port specifically
The port of Makhachkala is Russia's only deep-water port on the Caspian Sea that does not freeze. It operates year-round and handles both liquid and dry cargo, with a separate oil terminal. The military infrastructure of the Caspian Flotilla is nearby.
So it is not a random target. It is a point through which logistics passes, and when that point starts burning, the message is not aimed at Dagestan - it is aimed at Moscow, and it says there is no longer any deep rear.
The governor says everything is extinguished and nobody was hurt. Perhaps so. But notice what changes with every attack like this: not so much the damage as the map. Three years ago the war ended at the border. Now it ends wherever the last drone reaches - and that range, as this night shows, is growing faster than any of the estimates.
