Damaged hair is not repaired, it is cut: ten cuts that fix the summer damage without taking the length

Sun, salt, chlorine and heat leave hair with dry, damaged ends. That is the September bill for July and August, and it arrives for everyone. The only question is how it gets paid. The industry has a ready answer - mask, serum, ampoule, treatment - and that answer is expensive and largely too late. Hairdressers have a different answer and it is free: scissors.

That does not mean saying goodbye to long hair. Anyone who has grown it out for years knows how hard it is to give up a few centimetres. There are cuts that solve exactly this - they take off the most damaged part without taking the length, and with some of them the difference is more in the shape than in the centimetres.

The smallest intervention is face framing - the front strands are layered and frame the face. That is the section that suffers most over the summer, and it is also the section people see first. The curtain fringe follows similar logic: it parts in the middle and falls to both sides, so it repairs the front zone and can later be grown out again without any drama.

If you want shape without losing length, there are long layers, the heart cut and the so-called butterfly cut. In the heart cut the ends are shaped into a rounded form resembling the letter C - the hair stays long, but the ends stop looking heavy and parched. The butterfly distributes the layers so the back keeps almost all the length, meaning the change is in the movement, not the centimetres.

For the braver there is the wolf cut, in a long-hair version too: layers throughout plus a fringe, with plenty of movement and character, while the length stays untouched. The softer variant is the shaggy - the same idea, more gently executed, for those who want a rebellious detail without a radical move.

If your hair is fine, the logic flips. Here layers do not help; a blunt cut does - a straight cut with no layering, gathering all the hair into a clean line and creating a sense of density. For curly hair the same role is played by the halo cut, which creates a rounded silhouette around the head, takes the weight out of the ends and gives the curls their movement back.

And if you have decided to settle the matter once and for all, there is the midi length. It is shorter than long hair but stays versatile enough, and in one move it removes most of the summer damage.

The logic under all ten is the same and it is worth saying plainly: damaged hair is not repaired, it is cut. Products can make it softer and shinier, but they cannot restore the structure of something that spent months drying in the sun and bathing in salt. That is why this list exists in September, not in June.
