When she studied psychology in London, she told nobody on the course which family she came from. Mahra bint Maktoum belongs to the Al Maktoum dynasty, which has ruled Dubai since the nineteenth century. At university she was just another student.
That detail is what makes this story more interesting than the standard tale of a wealthy heiress with a charitable project. Mahra - or Mia, as she is known - has 1,029 Instagram followers and five posts in total. She is far more active on LinkedIn, where she presents herself as a business psychologist, investor and philanthropist. She gave the first interview of her life recently, in her early thirties.
Where it started
Her father died when she was 19. That is where the interest in psychology began, and her mother, who herself worked on mental health and education, pushed her towards university. "I wanted to understand myself better. I needed to know who I was," she told the British magazine that published the interview.
She studied at the University of East London, then took master's degrees at two British universities. She worked in a high-security psychiatric hospital - not the kind of placement someone seeks out to decorate a CV.
The app
Out of that came MindFriend, a platform connecting people with qualified psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists. The aim, as she describes it, is to make trustworthy mental health information easier to reach. The app is due out soon, backed by 300 professionals included in a register of vetted specialists.
This is worth pausing on. The problem this platform solves is not a Dubai problem - it is literally the problem everyone in our region faces when they decide to look for help. You do not know who to turn to, you do not know whether the person you found online is qualified, and you do not know who to trust among a hundred profiles all claiming to be therapists. A register of vetted people sounds boring until you need one.
Does anyone here even keep that record in a form an ordinary person can read? That question is worth more than the whole Dubai story.
Twenty brothers and sisters
Mahra is one of twenty children. She spent her childhood between Britain, Switzerland and Dubai, meaning she never had one place that was home. "I feel the planet is my home," she says - a sentence that from anyone else would sound like marketing, and from someone with that biography sounds like a statement of fact.
She was seen publicly with the actress Salma Hayek in 2025, at a dinner in Cannes, where she also met Hayek's husband François-Henri Pinault and Nicole Kidman. Of Hayek, a friend of years through family ties, she says she is "a force of nature when it comes to philanthropy".
The rest she keeps to herself - and that is the part that least resembles a royal family today. In an era when everyone with access to a camera uses it, an heiress from a ruling dynasty with five posts in a lifetime on Instagram is almost an anomaly. Whether that is because she has nothing to show, or because she has worked out that silence costs more than visibility, she did not say.
