The solitaire - a ring with a single, prominent diamond - remains the choice of queens and celebrities through the decades. The message is simple and precisely for that reason powerful: only you. In a world where everything is designed to be bigger and more broken up, a single stone that says it all is the opposite move.
The royal examples show the range. Victoria of Sweden, when she married Daniel Westling in 2010, received a three-carat brilliant diamond on a white gold band, the work of the royal jewellers „W.A. Bolin”, valued at around 100,000 euros. Eugenie of York, meanwhile, chose something rarer - a pink-orange sapphire with a diamond wreath on yellow gold.
Charlotte Casiraghi, granddaughter of Grace Kelly, went for a large diamond on yellow gold when she married Dimitri Rassam in 2019. Madeleine of Sweden, in turn, wears a central diamond with four prongs and small brilliants on the sides. Each of these rings tells a different story, but all rely on the same principle - one stone, none more.
Celebrities go a step further in size. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, wife of Jason Statham, wears a central diamond valued at around 350,000 dollars. Hailey Bieber, meanwhile, dazzles with a six-carat oval diamond on a yellow gold band, worth 600,000 dollars. And Lily Collins had an old-cut diamond worth over 80,000 dollars - stolen in 2023, but later returned.
The fashion in engagement rings changes every season, but the solitaire stubbornly survives. Perhaps because it does not try to impress with complexity, but with clarity. And there is something here worth thinking about beyond the jewellery - the strongest messages are usually the shortest too.
