Students organised through Studenti.mk sent an open letter to Education and Science Minister Vesna Janevska. The tone: sharp. None of the usual diplomatic formulas. "Don't drive us out of Macedonia," the letter says. And it isn't addressed only to her - they also speak to PM Hristijan Mickoski.
What do the students want? First - more responses to their letters. The Ministry of Education and Science, they say, hasn't responded to their meeting requests for months. Second - the return of high-achievement scholarships, which were cut. Third - a clear answer on the case at UKIM's Faculty of Philosophy.
At the Faculty of Philosophy, according to the students, an inspection was carried out at the expense of student rights. They want to know - did the inspectors who took part receive promotions? The question is simple: is the state rewarding people who reduce the quality of education?
The letter opens a bigger dilemma. Students say they whistled at Minister Janevska in front of the Faculty of Philosophy over problems with student meals, scholarship delays and the state of higher education. That's a real picture from the ground - not an index of political loyalty, not party questions, a direct question about study conditions.
The harshest accusation in the letter is the systemic demotivation of the most successful students. "Knowledge is worthless", students quote as the message the state is sending them. And they add: they are already planning to leave. Germany, Austria, Switzerland - those are places where their work and knowledge will be more valued.
For a Balkan reader this is a story that has repeated for decades. Students are loud when they have specific grievances. Institutions stay quiet until the pressure goes public. And in the end, the problems usually get fixed for only part of the students - the ones who find a way to push through to the minister. The rest leave quietly. The question now is: will Janevska listen, or will she look for a new source of "whistles"?
