Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" is performed on 21 November at 7:30 pm at the National Opera and Ballet in Skopje. The dual role of Odette and Odile is danced by Nataša Trendafilova Gicev, Prince Siegfried is Balázs Lőcsei, and Rothbart is Dmytro Chebotar. Eduard Ambartsumyan from Armenia conducts the orchestra.

The ballet that is now a synonym for the genre was first performed in Moscow in 1877. The Skopje staging is by Ukrainian choreographer Viktor Yaremenko, with sets by Andrey Zlobin and costumes by Hanna Ipatieva. What matters in this version is the prologue: young Siegfried falls asleep dreaming of a girl in white, and Rothbart, the sorcerer of evil, decides to prove that true love is merely an invention of writers, poets and artists. A cynicism that doesn't sound dated even today.

On stage are the soloists, the ballet ensemble and the house orchestra, which is more people than at any club concert in town, and the ticket is 800 denars. Why do nights like this so rarely make the front pages?

The Opera doesn't sell through ticketing sites, so tickets are bought at the box office of the National Opera and Ballet, with information available on 02 3118 451.
