The Necks, the Australian avant-garde jazz trio with cult status, perform in Belgrade on September 20 at Teatar 78. For lovers of experimental music this is a rare visit by one of the most unusual and respected acts of the world improvisation scene.
The Necks were formed in 1987, and their lineup has stayed unchanged for decades - Chris Abrahams on piano and Hammond organ, Tony Buck on drums and Lloyd Swanton on bass. What sets them apart is their approach: instead of songs, they play long improvisations that can last a whole hour, built around repeating musical figures that slowly shift and grow. The result is something between minimalism, ambient, jazz and post-rock - music that critics describe as practically unclassifiable.
Every one of their performances is unique by nature - they don't play a fixed repertoire but build the composition in the moment, which means no two concerts are the same. That is exactly why The Necks have a devoted audience around the world that comes for the experience itself rather than for specific songs. Teatar 78 in Belgrade, an intimate venue, is ideal for this kind of focused listening.
Tickets run from around 2,105 denars and are available via tickets.rs. The show is at Teatar 78 in Belgrade, in the evening hours.
