The streaming platform Twitch will use its creators' content to train artificial intelligence models for its parent company Amazon. Everyone is opted in by default. Anyone who does not want it has to find and flip the switch themselves.
The way it was announced says everything. Instead of a message that Amazon is starting to learn from streams, Twitch wrote that it is „adding a setting that lets you opt out”. The same thing, turned around, to sound like a service to the user.
On a broadcast on the official channel, in front of almost 3,000 furious users, product director Mike Minton said the thing that usually goes unsaid. „Why isn't it opt-in? Everybody is writing that in the chat. I get it. There is an honest answer... If it were opt-in, nobody would opt in. That is the honest answer”, Minton said. The sentence is faster than any analysis: the company knows in advance that people would not give consent, so it does not ask for it.
He does not know what has been taken either
When one user asked whether his recordings had already been used, Minton replied that he does not know the answer because he does not know what Amazon has done and what it has used so far. The platform's product director does not know what the parent company has already taken off that platform's servers. That is not a misunderstanding - it is a description of the power relationship.
Mary Kish, head of community, pointed out that Twitch is not alone. Meta uses public content from Facebook and Instagram for its models. In the UK there is an opt-out option; elsewhere the only protection is to keep your profile closed, which for someone who earns from their posts is not a choice. In her view, the very existence of the opt-out switch is a response to the community's voice.
The material is valuable precisely because it is human: hours of voice, a face, reactions, live conversation - the most expensive fuel for models learning to sound like people. The people who created it created it for an audience, not to train a machine that tomorrow may replace exactly their way of speaking.
The switch exists. It is in the channel settings - not the dashboard - under security and privacy, in the section on generative AI training. Seen from here, where the internet taught us long ago that a ticked box is a formality, it is worth remembering that one click today costs less than any complaint later.
