Tetovo, Gostivar, Kicevo, Bitola, Makedonski Brod, Resen, Krusevo, Veles. Eight places, at least 19 people detained, and a list of seized items that reads like an inventory: a rifle with a telescopic sight, CZ pistols, an air rifle, hunting rifles, ammunition, a revolver, marijuana, cannabis plants, seeds, a white powdery substance, digital scales and cash in several currencies.

This is not one operation. That is the thing worth understanding before it gets passed on as a "blow against crime".

What exactly was found, and where

In Lesok, at the home of a 41-year-old, police found a rifle with a telescopic sight, a CZ pistol, an air rifle and ammunition. After reports of gunshots in Kunovo, hunting rifles, pistols and ammunition were found in several holiday cottages - seven people were detained, six from Gostivar and one from Skopje.

In a separate Tetovo operation targeting a house and a workshop, three people were detained: a 19-year-old and two sixteen-year-olds, with a white powdery substance, marijuana, digital scales and foreign currency found on them.

In Kicevo - two men aged 28 and 31, marijuana and a scale. In Veles - a 22-year-old, marijuana and a digital scale. In Krusevo, on 22 August at 10:20, K.G. (58) was detained; a court-ordered search of his property turned up marijuana, cannabis plants, seeds and a revolver. Another five detentions are spread across Bitola, Makedonski Brod and Resen.

What the number doesn't say

Nineteen people in a single day sounds like a success, and in part it is. But these are individual cases, not a dismantled network - and the difference matters. Stories from eight places, unconnected to each other, gathered by coincidence into the same daily bulletin create the impression of a coordinated strike, when in fact they are local departments doing their everyday job.

The second thing worth repeating: detention is the start of a procedure, not a verdict. A scale that was found is not trafficking, a hunting rifle in a cottage is not automatically illegal, and initials in a press release are not a name on a register of convictions. A court decides that, and usually long after the day the bulletin gets its biggest readership.

If some of these nineteen cases end in charges, that will be news. If they don't - it probably won't be.
