Fires above Tabanovce, the modular hospitals case closed, a 68,675-denar basket

The smoke arrived before the fire

A thick curtain covered almost the whole municipality of Lipkovo, parts of Aracinovo, and it can be smelled in Kumanovo too. For now, the fire is on the other side of the border: it is spreading from the Serbian village of Trnava towards Straza, directly above the Tabanovce border crossing. The deputy director of the National Forests agency called it a very bad fire of enormous intensity and appealed for it to be brought under control. The appeal has been made, but it is not clear to whom: the fire burns under Serbian jurisdiction, and the Macedonian side can watch the smoke and wait. Cross-border firefighting coordination is exactly the kind of mechanism that exists in regional agreements and is rarely tested until it is needed.

A hundred metres short of the houses in Bonce

That is how close the fire came to the last houses before it was stopped. Volunteer firefighters from Bitola and Kocani, together with professional crews from Prilep and Kavadarci, worked through the night to hold the line in front of the village. "If it had not been for them, the fire would certainly have entered the village," said the director of the Crisis Management Centre. In the past twenty-four hours, 31 open-air fires were recorded in the country, 23 were put out, eight remain active. No rain is forecast. That is a fine story about people who travelled hundreds of kilometres for somebody else's village, and a less fine one about the system that depends on them.

A closed case is not an answered question

The prosecution has closed the pre-investigation into the public procurement of the 19 modular hospitals, having found insufficient evidence of a criminal offence tied to the purchases themselves. VLEN and VREDI are demanding answers from Ali Ahmeti and DUI; no answer has come. It is worth drawing the distinction the press releases blur: there are already final convictions of former hospital directors over the fire-safety failures, but the closed case concerns the procurement. The prosecution determines whether there is enough evidence to prosecute. That is not the same question as who approved the standards, who signed the specification and who carried out the oversight. Five years on, the families of the 14 people who died in Tetovo are not waiting for a new investigation. They are waiting for an explanation somebody will sign with their own name.

68,675 denars for a month in which nothing unusual happened

That is what the August union basket requires for a family of four, and with rent the figure jumps to 84,050. The minimum net wage is 26,046 denars, which means two full minimum wages come to 52,092 - around three quarters of a basic life, and roughly 62 per cent if the flat is not yours. For a single parent the gap is 42,629 denars a month. The basket is published every month, punctually, like a weather forecast, and it has risen by 177 denars in a month and 3,168 in a year. The question is who reads it inside the institutions that set the minimum wage.

Same week, two calculations of the same data

The government claims wage growth 70 per cent faster, the opposition claims a fall of 1,163 denars. When the monthly pace is calculated from the same state statistics data, the difference comes out at 0.72 against 0.73 per cent - a hundredth of a percentage point. Both sides look at the same table and find two opposite press releases in it.

Hectares, routes and drills: what each number actually measures

The peak of the West Nile fever outbreak is expected in September, and the City of Skopje's documentation says neither what was sprayed nor in what quantity, only how many hectares were flown over. From the airports in Skopje and Ohrid, 28 new destinations have been announced, from Palermo to Wroclaw, but the press conference does not say how many of those routes are subsidised or how many people actually fly them. The Public Security Bureau marked 25 years with a demonstration drill and a message that crime has become more sophisticated; the drill shows capability, not how much of the requested equipment has been bought. And on the main square, the lawn is being landscaped for a second time, on ground that was already landscaped once, with nobody checking the difference between what was paid for and what was installed.

A police bulletin that bundles unconnected cases

A scoped carbine, a revolver, cannabis and digital scales, 19 people detained from Tetovo to Veles. The figure looks like a dismantled network, but these are separate local cases gathered into a single document. Being detained is not a verdict. Separately, a Polish national drove 164 kilometres an hour where the limit is 80, caught by the "Safe City" system and stopped only on his way out of the country.

The region burns the same, only the arithmetic differs

In Serbia, the president declared the country a superpower at putting out fires, while helicopters arrive from four states and 3,960 hectares have burned. In Bosnia, a factory in Vitez was set alight deliberately, and two of the four suspects are minors, one of whom admitted he was hired by a man known for recruiting children into crime. Elections there are on 4 October.

The roads, and what comes this afternoon

At Tabanovce the wait is 40 minutes both entering and leaving, at Bogorodica around 30 minutes on the way out. That is better than Saturday, when waits ran to an hour, but the Sunday afternoon peak is still ahead. The summer regime for lorries over 15 tonnes runs until 10pm, and on the Skopje - Ohrid stretch the limit is 7.5 tonnes.

What links most of these stories is not a single event but a habit: the number that gets published measures activity, not effect. Hectares flown over instead of quantity sprayed. Routes announced instead of passengers carried. A demonstration drill instead of equipment bought. A closed case instead of a signed explanation. In the heavier part of the day - eight active fires with no rain forecast, and one village saved by people who came from two hundred kilometres away - that difference stops being statistical.
