Ainhi Garcia is an artificial intelligence engineer. That is her profession, that is what she lives on, and that is the fact people on the internet refused to accept for over a month. Instead they wrote to her that she is a kept woman, that she lives off somebody else's money, that she should get a job, and that she is replaceable.

The reason for all of it is that until July this year she was in a relationship with the footballer Nico Williams. A two-year relationship that ended quietly, right after the World Cup. No scandal, no public row. And yet, once the relationship ended, the comments did not stop - they intensified.

Garcia collected them and posted them. Then she wrote that it was damaging her health and that she was stepping away from social media, temporarily or for good. That is where the reckoning ends for a person with no club behind them, no agent, no press office.

Then Williams spoke. Not through a club statement, but himself. He wrote that she is one of the best people he has met and that nobody has the right to put out that light. Of the people attacking her he said they have empty lives full of frustration and need somewhere to pour it out. He finished with a sentence saying that even though they are no longer together, he will always defend her.

That is a scene worth noting, because the opposite is the norm. Usually the former partner stays silent, and the silence gets read as confirmation. Here somebody with millions of followers stood behind a person he has nothing left to gain from.

What remains is the mechanics, and they are not Spanish. A woman in a relationship with a famous man is treated as an accessory, and when the relationship ends, the accessory gets thrown away. The question nobody asks themselves is why her profession, which is at least as demanding as his, does not appear even once in the comments. The answer is that nobody was interested in it.
