Pensions rise three percent, and the Fund is 19 billion in the red

From September percentage-based indexation returns, which means a pensioner on 20,228 denars gets about 607 denars more, while someone on the highest pension of 94,332 denars gets about 2,830. That is not a rounding error - it is the logic of the Swiss formula itself: half from wage growth, half from the cost of living. The difference from the flat 7,000-denar rises is the whole point. Back then everyone got the same amount; now everyone gets the same percentage of their own pension. Behind that number sits another one: contribution revenue is 71.4 billion denars, pension spending is over 90.2 billion, and the state budget patches the gap.

141,000 square metres behind East Gate, and a fee 23.5 million euros smaller

The draft plan in Gazi Baba earmarks close to 141,000 square metres for hotel complexes. Zoned for flats, the development fee would run to roughly 25 million euros; stamped as a hotel, the investor pays five percent of that - just over 1.2 million. The question is not whether a hotel may be built. It is what becomes of those buildings afterwards. The answer already exists on the neighbouring plot, where people live in flats they cannot register as their address with the interior ministry.

Six dead from West Nile fever, against five in fourteen years

Between 2011 and 2025 the virus killed five people in total; this year, in a matter of months, it has killed six. Mining worth 1.22 billion denars, inspections unmentioned

On Miners' Day the minister declared that no investment is worth more than a human life, in the same speech that carried the figure of 1.22 billion denars in concession revenue. The number of inspections went unmentioned - and inspection reports are precisely where that sentence gets tested. There is a similar blank in Tetovo, where drinking water has been banned in four villages while the laboratory runs 400 analyses a year for a city and 99 villages.

Roads, a train and a fire

At Bogorodica the wait this morning was 45 minutes to leave the country - which, for the last week of August, counts as a good morning. The more interesting part is the rest of the statement: a list of stretches being dug up, repaired and driven around, from Miladinovci to Kichevo - Ohrid. From 1 September Zelenikovo gets eight trains a day into Skopje, a 24 to 28 minute journey, while three other lines around the country are being scrapped. And on Zheden firefighters are hunting the fire line with the help of local hunters, because the higher ground is the hardest to reach.

Mladic died in The Hague, and the story was rewritten on the spot

Ratko Mladic died in UN detention at 84, under a final life sentence for genocide. What followed was not an argument about the verdict but about how to write the news - in parts of the region the court came out as the culprit and the convicted man as the victim. The speaker of Montenegro's parliament sent condolences to his son, and not in a private capacity. The same day Norway's King Harald V died, the last European monarch who remembered the Second World War as a child rather than as a lesson.

Ratcliffe in Moscow, while Dugin promises a pause instead of peace

The CIA director landed in Moscow unannounced, the first such visit since 2021, and Moscow confirmed the meeting was with the head of the SVR. What was said stayed secret; Trump called the visit semi-routine and immediately added that something might come of it. Meanwhile Dugin warns that a ceasefire leaving every cause untouched is not the end of a war but a pause. A frozen front that lasts thirty years is not a theory in this part of the world.
