Rijeka's Belfast Food play Zagreb's Vintage Industrial Bar on November 4, and with it they mark thirty years of a career. Doors open at 8pm, the concert starts at 9.15pm.
The story starts in 1996 in Rijeka, when a group of musicians hooked on Irish traditional music decided to build a band that welds original songs to the spirit of Celtic folk. What began as a love of the sound of The Dubliners and The Pogues grew into an identity of its own, joining Irish folk, rock and Celtic punk to a local sensibility.
The discography runs "Live in Rijeka" from 1997, "Zasto zato" from 1999, "Melodije Irske i Kvarnera" from 2002, "Zeleni album" from 2005, "Live in Tvornica" from 2008 and "Ocekivanja" from 2016. That two of the six releases are live recordings is no accident: this is a band whose point is the concert, not the studio.
Their shows are recognisable by Scottish kilts, accordions, fiddles, a crowd that sings along and pints going up in the air. Irish folk and Balkan celebration are two traditions that understand each other far more easily than an outsider would guess. Tickets through entrio.hr run from 15 to 18 euros, roughly 924 to 1,109 denars.
