Exactly one year ago, a few-second clip changed the life of Kristin Cabot - and she is still paying the price. At a Coldplay concert in Massachusetts on July 16, 2025, the kiss cam caught her together with the then chief executive of the tech company where she worked as head of human resources. The reaction of the two - surprise, discomfort, a quick attempt to hide - was enough for the internet to write the rest.
A line from frontman Chris Martin - "either they're having an affair or they're very shy" - sealed the moment. The clip gathered over 130 million views, and the word "Coldplaygate" became known everywhere. In a few seconds, a woman with a long and serious career became the object of global mockery.
Twelve months later, the situation is still hard. Cabot, 53 and a mother of two, says she still cannot find stable work. She has taken part in several processes for senior positions, but the media stigma remains an obstacle that neither experience nor a CV can erase. In the meantime, she lives off savings - money meant for her children's education and for retirement.
Cabot's story says something uncomfortable about the times we live in: how quickly a public clip can shake a career built over decades, and how long the punishment lasts for something that lasted a few seconds. Beyond the professional blow came the online insults, the messages, the harassment - so she had to withdraw from public life even further.
Instead of sinking, Cabot is trying to turn the pain into something useful - she has drawn closer to organisations fighting against digital harassment and the consequences of mass exposure online. The noise has died down, she admits, but the scars remain; she is still gripped by unease when someone recognises her. The question her case leaves behind is simple and awkward: how many of us, if we ended up on a big screen at the wrong second, would survive a year of attention like this?
