In the police bulletin published on 6 September you can count eight separate reports with elements of domestic or partner violence. Not for a week. Not for a month. For one day.
The list, town by town, looks like this:
Gjorce Petrov. A 19-year-old woman reported that her 20-year-old former partner physically assaulted her in her home at around four in the morning, took money from her bag and threatened her. He was given an official interview at the police station. The interior ministry did not report that he was detained.
Kavadarci. A 40-year-old man was detained after a report that he attacked his 33-year-old wife, with whom he was in divorce proceedings, and threatened her with a sharp object. The public prosecutor and the Centre for Social Work were notified.
Stip. A 23-year-old was detained after a report of violence against his 24-year-old wife. Her injuries were established at the clinical hospital in Stip.
The Gostivar area, twice. In one case a 40-year-old woman reported being physically and sexually assaulted by her common-law partner. In the other, a 49-year-old woman reported that her husband attacked her physically and with a glass object. In both cases the reported men were detained.
Kumanovo. A 48-year-old woman reported being attacked in the family home by her son and daughter-in-law.
Gazi Baba. A woman reported that she and her former husband were attacked by their underage son, who also damaged some of the household furnishings.
Skopje. A 48-year-old woman from Skopje reported that her husband attacked her with a blunt object, damaged her mobile phone and threatened her with a sharp object.
These are allegations from police reports, not legally established guilt - and that distinction holds for every one of the eight cases. What is not an allegation is the number of reports. That is official, published by the interior ministry itself.
Eight in one bulletin is a figure that demands the question of how usual it is. If this is an average day, then the annual figure is of an entirely different order to the one that makes the headlines. And these are only the reports that reached a police station - not the ones that did not.
The geography says something too. Skopje, Kumanovo, Kavadarci, Stip, Gostivar - not a single region is exempt. No perpetrator profile repeats: a partner, a former partner, a husband in divorce proceedings, a son, a daughter-in-law, a minor child. Every relationship inside a home appeared at least once in the same bulletin.
The difference in response is the part that stands out most. In the Gostivar area both men were detained. In Kavadarci and Stip - detained. In Gjorce Petrov, where the assault happened at four in the morning and involved taking money and making threats, all that followed was an official interview. There may be a legal reason for that which the bulletin does not explain. But from the position of the woman who reported him, the difference between "detained" and "he was spoken to" is the difference between sleeping and not.
The Centre for Social Work is mentioned in one of the eight cases. A prosecutor - also in one. The remaining six end with the sentence that an appropriate filing will follow once the case is documented.
That sentence is the end of every case like this in public. The question no bulletin answers is how many of those filings reach a verdict, and after how long. Until then, the only thing the system reliably produces is a list.
