Some thirty kilometres from Zagreb, in the cinema hall in Brdovec, "Bitola" will be sung tonight. The women's vocal group Ezerki and the orchestra Sedum Osmini (Seven Eighths) perform on Sunday, 25 October, at 6:30 pm, in an evening dedicated to Macedonian music and to the documentary "Ludi za Makedonija" (Crazy About Macedonia).

Ezerki were founded in 1995 within the Croatian-Macedonian Society in Zagreb, with one goal: to keep Macedonian folk song from fading among Macedonians in Croatia. Fifteen singers, more than 300 performances in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia and Italy. The orchestra is named after the rhythm every Macedonian recognises in their feet: seven-eighths. Over the years they have worked with Toše Proeski, Kaliopi, Rade Šerbedžija, Nina Badrić, Radojka Šverko, Zorica Kondža, Massimo Savić, Matija Dedić and Zoran Predin, and last year they held a big gala concert at Zagreb's Lisinski hall.

The programme is the one every Macedonian wedding knows: "Jovano, Jovanke", "Makedonsko devojche", "Eleno kjerko", "Bitola" and "Fato mori dushmanke", with oro dances between the songs. After the concert comes "Crazy About Macedonia", a film previously screened in Skopje, Tetovo and Ohrid. Thirty years on, the group sings both at Lisinski and in cinema halls across Zagorje, and the songs are the same ones our grandmothers sang.

Tickets cost 15 euros, about 920 denars, on mojekarte.hr, and the organiser also takes phone bookings. Brdovec is on the road from Zagreb toward the Slovenian border, a small place where tonight the hall will sing in Macedonian.
