If you think fake policemen are just a fairy tale from phone scams, here's the scene live: two 22-year-olds showed up at the door of an 85-year-old woman in Štip, introduced themselves as police officers and tried to get into her home. The goal, by all appearances, was a “document check”.
What stopped them wasn't an alarm system, nor an emergency response. It was a neighbour. She grew suspicious of the two men's behaviour, reacted and immediately alerted the authorities. Within a short time the pair were found and detained. The Štip police filed a criminal complaint against E.Đ. (22) from Štip and D.S. (22) from the village of Psača, Rankovce municipality, for “impersonation”.
The story says two things. The first is that the elderly are a target - isolated, trusting, easy to frighten with a phrase like “police, open up”. The second is encouraging: the best protection for older people is often not the state, but the neighbour who still watches who walks into the building. That old Balkan habit of neighbours looking out for one another - this time it stopped a robbery.
Police are urging citizens, and especially the elderly, to be cautious when strangers claim to be officials and to call the authorities immediately. Good advice - but let's not forget that the real hero in this story has neither a badge nor a name in the press release. Only open eyes and the conscience not to shut a neighbour's door.
