Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski counted out five "no more"s in a single sentence yesterday: no more gangs, no more crime, no more racketeering, no more marijuana economy, no more cuts from the Lottery. Rhetorically, it lands. Factually, it is something else - in the very same week those denials were spoken, the Interior Ministry filed criminal charges against 27 people. He called pension growth "16 times higher", with no time frame, no baseline and no methodology. When a number is said without the unit that makes it true, it stops being data and becomes a slogan.
That 27 is not an abstraction. The driving licence scheme ran for six years - four middlemen, and two people who used a forged licence to obtain a certificate to drive an international coach. Which means people holding a bought licence were sitting behind the wheel of a bus full of passengers. Seven of those charged are on the run. The official removed in 2021 was reinstated by court ruling in 2025, which on its own tells you how slowly the circle closes here.
The same pattern - the form respected, the substance missing - shows up in how the independence celebration's organiser was chosen. One bid. A four-day deadline, two days of which were a weekend. The commission's chairman says it only checked whether the paperwork was complete, while the public call says something entirely different. That same man then appears as a programme author. The paperwork was confirmed complete. Whether completeness was the only thing worth checking before handing over 5.5 million euros is the question nobody asked.
And when an institution actually needs to work, it knows how not to exist. Nine months after a unanimous decision, the inquiry commission into "Puls" still has not been formed. One side is waiting on a letter, another on a different commission, a third on a consent. In those same nine months the Supreme Court overturned a verdict, one investigation was closed, and Deko is about to walk out of detention. Waiting is not neutral - it is a decision, just one nobody has to sign.
The heaviest story of the day exposes the same crack in the crudest way. A father and son were killed in a head-on collision near Ilinden, at two in the morning on the local road towards Miladinovci. Three young people were left in life-threatening condition. On the same day, the police and the prosecution announced different ages for the dead. That is not a detail you let slide: a family reading those statements is reading two different versions of its own loss. If two institutions cannot agree on the age of a man who died the night before, it is hard to trust they will agree on the cause.
In Šuto Orizari more than 20 shops burned down in a single night. The fire lasted three hours. Setting it took fifty seconds - they arrived on scooters, torched the shops and left. The security camera footage proving it did not come from an institution, it came from social media. When the evidence is carried by a shopkeeper's own camera rather than by the investigation, the question is not what happened, but who was watching at all.
The same passivity shows in the domestic violence bulletin: five cases in two days - Veles, Berovo, Centar, Prilep, Tetovo - and four days of waiting before two of them were reported at all. Those four days are the most important figure in the whole story. And in the row over building on Vodno, procedure again covered for substance: Mayor Gerasimovski is demanding an apology for the hearing being filmed, while the court ruling that struck down the old plan is not an instruction to resubmit the same plan with a new date.
The day's economic news reads as a continuation of the same thing. The ministry celebrated the BB+ rating, while Fitch, in that same report, warned that the deficit has climbed from 3.5 to 4.1 percent of GDP and that the growth forecast has been cut. One document, two readings. Tax debt owed to the state has reached 221.8 million euros, and the largest debtor - a Skopje firm owing 14.87 million - has no assets to collect against. The ECB raised rates by 0.25 points, and the six-month EURIBOR has already jumped this year from 2.105 to 2.80 percent: on variable-rate euro loans, that comes due at the next adjustment.
The most concrete number, though, is the smallest one. A kilo of peppers costs 26 denars to grow and is bought at the collection points for 15, when the contracted price for first class is 40. Across the border the same pepper fetches about a euro. That is why this year's harvest is ending up under the tractors, and that is not a protest - it is an invoice.
July brought 223,711 tourists and 795,083 overnight stays, but the interesting figure is a different one: foreigners are more numerous, yet domestic guests account for two thirds of the nights - five nights against two. Turkey still leads on visitor numbers, but its count fell by 7.6 percent; this year's growth came from Serbia. And in Bitola flowers were laid for 84 years since Bolno - behind the anniversary stand two biographies that ended at 21 and 22. One was secretary of the local committee at nineteen, the other had written fifty poems by his nineteenth year.
If today has a common thread, it is not crime and it is not incompetence. It is the gap between procedure and accountability. The paperwork was complete, the decision was unanimous, the statements went out the same day. By the letter of the form, nobody did anything wrong. And that is precisely why one scheme ran for six years, one commission has not existed for nine months, and two institutions said two different things on the same day about the same two dead men.
