Greece Moves a Patriot Battery to Crete: Iran Is Already Looking at US Bases in Southeast Europe

Greece is moving a Patriot battery from Karpathos to Crete. Not for an exercise, not for a rotation - but because, according to reports, Iran is already weighing strikes on American military facilities in Europe. Not in the Middle East. In Europe.

The system is to be positioned near the naval complex at Souda Bay, one of the most important American and NATO positions in the eastern Mediterranean. The move began over the weekend, and Greek media published photographs of the system being loaded at the port before transport.

The Greek defence ministry has not officially commented on the details of the operation. According to Kathimerini, citing sources, Greek defence bodies and armed forces are operating at heightened readiness because of a possible widening of the conflict with Iran.

Where the Middle East stops

According to the Financial Times, Iranian forces are no longer confining their possible response to the region. Two sources close to the Iranian leadership say Tehran is analysing strikes on American military sites in southeast Europe, should Trump escalate the operation against Iran.

Two locations are named specifically. The Bulgarian air base at Bezmer, cleared for refuelling American aircraft since July. And the British base at Akrotiri in Cyprus, which was hit by drones in March.

Look at that list again. Bulgaria. Cyprus. These are not abstract points on the map of some distant conflict - they are neighbours.

The range is the number that says everything

According to intelligence assessments shared with Athens, Iran holds a significant number of ballistic missiles with a range over 2,000 kilometres. That is the one sentence in the whole story worth remembering, because everything else follows from it - including Greece's decision to place air defence on an island.

When a country starts moving its Patriot batteries around, that is not a message to the enemy. It is an admission that the risk assessment has changed.

Macedonia has no Bezmer, no Souda Bay, and no battery of its own to move anywhere. But Macedonia has geography - and that geography sits in precisely the part of Europe now being named in intelligence analyses. Is anyone here even reading that analysis?
