Manchester City guilty on all charges - rivals want a longer exile

An independent commission has found Manchester City guilty on all charges of breaching financial rules between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. The club, which has won 22 major trophies since Sheikh Mansour's takeover in 2008 - including eight Premier League titles and one Champions League - is now fighting back with an appeal, and the process must be completed within 12 weeks of filing. Chief executive Ferran Soriano promised the club will fight "aggressively" to clear its name. Several Premier League clubs believe that even a points deduction sending City down to the Championship for a season would be too lenient - they want a longer absence from the top flight. Pep Guardiola, who left the dugout this summer, said he is "here - more than ever". Nine years of breaches, and still no punishment. How long does justice take when the accused has pockets that deep?

Ronaldo leaves Portugal's camp: "At the right time I will tell the truth"

Cristiano Ronaldo left the Portugal national team camp early, after a press conference by coach Jorge Jesus and a conversation with federation president Pedro Proença. The trigger was the Nations League game against Norway: Jesus started João Félix and Gonçalo Ramos up front, both scored in the 2:1 win, and 41-year-old Ronaldo warmed up but stayed on the bench. At the final whistle he went straight to the dressing room without thanking the fans who had travelled with the team. Jesus is categorical: "No player will make me change my mind." With 146 goals in 234 games for his country, Ronaldo's numbers are beyond dispute. The open question is a different one - does a 41-year-old know when to step aside?

Queiroz leaves Ghana after less than a month

Portugal's Carlos Queiroz and the Ghana Football Association have parted ways by mutual consent, less than a month after bringing him back to the dugout on 2 September. The last straw was a 2:4 home defeat to Gambia in qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations - Ghana led 2:0 at half-time, then fell apart at the stadium in Accra. Queiroz himself called it a "horrible day" for Ghanaian football. The 73-year-old led Ghana at the World Cup this summer, where they beat Panama, drew 0:0 with England and went out to Colombia 0:1. A federation that brings a coach back, then sends him packing after one bad game - how many times have we watched the same show much closer to home?

Under-21s: a draw with Montenegro in Bitola on Tanevski's debut

Macedonia's under-21 team played its first official match under new coach Aleksandar Tanevski - 1:1 with Montenegro in Bitola. The visitors went ahead in the 44th minute through Kostić, Macedonia then hit the crossbar, and in the 57th minute Ljatifi equalised from the penalty spot. In the final seconds Mehmed had a clear header from four or five metres, but the win slipped away. It is the first draw in the ninth qualifying game and doesn't change the table: Macedonia are fifth, second from bottom, on 7 points. Tanevski didn't hide his frustration: "In the first half we played as if we were cramped." Next up is an away game in Sweden on 5 October.

Senior team: two defeats without a goal, and hope is called Gaštarov

The senior national team began the new edition of the Nations League, now in League B, with two defeats and no goals: 0:3 to Switzerland in Skopje and 0:2 to Slovenia at Stožice. Coach Goce Sedloski is under fire but insists he won't abandon the process he has started. The bright spot is 19-year-old Matej Gaštarov of Crvena Zvezda - tall, calm on the ball, with good vision - on whom part of the domestic football public is already sticking the "new Matić" label. Slovenia coach Boštjan Cesar toned it down after the win: no euphoria, they had beaten "only Macedonia". The wins over Italy and Germany are still the fans' strongest argument. When will the next one come?
