The Talking Bin That Stopped People on Bitola's Promenade: The Idea Came from a Swiss Project

A talking rubbish bin has appeared on the town promenade in Bitola. The international youth cooperation association Interaktiv installed it as a guerrilla action - with interactive messages aimed directly at passers-by, nudging them to dispose of their waste properly.

It worked. Citizens of all ages stopped, looked at the unusual installation and engaged with its message. A bin that answers back when you throw something into it draws more attention than any clean-environment banner ever hung on that same promenade.

The numbers behind the action

The action builds on Bitola municipality's Environment Programme for 2026. That programme provides for a green-space development strategy with a budget of 1,500,000 denars, and for the installation of underground municipal waste containers, for which 3,000,000 denars have been secured.

Four and a half million denars in total for the two items. The guerrilla action, meanwhile, was delivered as part of a Swiss project - an electoral support programme implemented by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems.

So: the municipal programme has its own money, while the innovative idea that actually made people stop came through a foreign project and an NGO. That is not a criticism of any one person - it is a pattern that repeats across the whole country. Infrastructure gets funded from the budget, ideas arrive from abroad.

The question worth asking is whether the bin will still be on the promenade after the project's final day. Guerrilla actions have an expiry date. The three-million-denar underground containers will last longer - if they get installed.

Bitola, like every town here, faces the same quiet truth: the most expensive part of cleanliness is not the equipment, it is the habit. One of those you can procure through a tender. The other you cannot.
