70 Blocks in His First Playoffs: Wembanyama Broke Mutombo's Record and Brought the Spurs Back Into the Finals

Victor Wembanyama is writing history again - and at the very moment the floor was burning under San Antonio's feet. With three blocks in game three of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks, the Frenchman became the player with the most blocks in a first career playoffs, breaking the record of the legendary Dikembe Mutombo. In doing so, he also became the first player in league history with 70 blocks in a debut playoff campaign.

The record came in a win worth double. After two losses at home, the Spurs walked into Madison Square Garden and pulled off a crucial 115-111 win, dropping the series to 2-1 for the Knicks. A Finals that looked like it was closing early is suddenly a series again.

And the lion's share of that turnaround bears Wembanyama's signature. In game two his late turnover weighed heavily in the defeat - and everyone waited to see how he'd respond. The answer: 32 points on 11-of-18 shooting, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in 39 minutes. The New York crowd fell silent just as it was planning a celebration.

The Spurs' road to the Finals was already historic - they eliminated the reigning champion too. Now comes game four, again at Madison Square Garden, on Wednesday night. A win there means leveling the series and bringing it back to San Antonio for game five. The question the whole league is asking: if this is Wembanyama in his first playoffs, what will the second be like?
