Sometimes the seating plan says more than the communiqués. In Moscow, US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner sat at the same table as Vladimir Putin, for three and a half hours. In Kyiv, the same day, Volodymyr Zelensky was placed apart, at a considerable distance from them, on the opposite side of the room.
Both photographs are from the same diplomatic mission. And both say who receives whom, and who comes to whom.
Three hours in the Kremlin, zero concrete outcomes
The White House said the talks covered concrete steps towards resolving the war, with details to be published in the coming weeks. Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov called the talks "substantive, constructive and frank" and said the American delegation brought "a series of ideas about possible paths to a solution".
Translated from diplomatic: nothing was agreed. The only concrete thing to come out of Moscow is a three-day pause in attacks on capital cities. Three days. For a war that has lasted more than four years.
Putin presented the Russian assessment of the military situation and repeated that a lasting solution must address what Moscow considers the roots of the conflict - a formulation that in translation into any language means the same thing: we set the terms.
Donbas is still the stone nobody moves
According to sources close to the Kremlin cited by Bloomberg, Putin gave no signal that he will drop the demand for Ukraine to cede even the part of the Donetsk region Moscow does not currently control. Kyiv rejects that demand. That is the entire negotiating position, reduced to a single sentence, and it has not changed.
The same sources say something sharper still: "Expectations are extremely low". The reason is simple - Russia believes it holds the advantage on the ground, so it has no reason at all to make serious concessions. Russian demands do not soften as the talks drag on. They tighten.
The content of Trump's new plan remained secret. It is not known whether the envoys brought something genuinely new or a reworded version of already rejected proposals around a free economic zone in Donbas - an idea Moscow has turned down once already.
Kyiv answered the way a man answers when offered peace on someone else's terms
"We are ready to talk. Ukraine has always been and will continue to be constructive. We are interested in bringing the end of the war closer. Peace is needed. Security guarantees are needed. A dignified post-war peace is needed", Zelensky said.
Four sentences, and a demand in every one. The talks then continued in an expanded format, with representatives of France, Britain and Germany - meaning Europe did not want to learn the decision after it had been made.
The central questions remain unchanged: territory, security guarantees and Ukraine's status after the war. No concrete breakthrough towards a peace agreement has been announced so far.
In the Balkans we know this scene by heart - the big players arrive, sit down, get photographed, and the map is drawn by others in a room none of us entered. The question is not whether the talks will continue. The question is who will be at the table when it is settled, and who will be sitting at a distance.
