Bags That Look Pulled From the Seabed: the Summer Trend Wiping Out Minimalism

Summer 2026 turns fashion towards the sea - literally. Instead of discreet details, designers this season are making bold, sculptural bags with shells, starfish, fish and coral as the main motif. It's part of a broader shift: quiet luxury and minimalism are giving way to playful, artisan pieces that stir emotion. The logo is no longer the point - the story is.

The houses reach for different techniques to bring the sea onto your shoulder. Some shape the bags like shells and mussels, others embroider fish and octopuses in relief, others build three-dimensional structures that recall coral. Chanel, for its 2026-2027 cruise collection, offered designs with embroidered fish and golden sea reliefs. Chloé drew attention on the runway with shell-shaped bags, and Loewe took inspiration from a mussel shell with its recognisable craftsmanship.

Balmain joined in too with shell-adorned designs, and Cult Gaia offered its „Venus” bag. Behind the whole trend lies a nostalgia everyone recognises - the treasures we collected on the beach as children, now elevated to the level of luxury. Designers describe it as a feeling of „freedom, travel and keeping summer forever.”

Will this dethrone the eternal raffia basket as the go-to summer bag? Probably not. But that's not the point either. These sea pieces offer something serial minimalism can't - fantasy, craft and character. For those tired of bags everyone else has, the sea is a good excuse to be different.
