The Chameleons, the Manchester post-punk outfit, play Klub Boogaloo in Zagreb on November 20, 2026, at 8pm. Tickets start at 30.50 euros through eventim.hr, and the occasion is their new album "Arctic Moon".

The band formed in Middleton, just outside Manchester, in 1981 - Mark Burgess on bass and vocals, Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding on guitars, John Lever on drums. The first album, "Script of the Bridge", came out in 1983 and is now mentioned in the same breath as Joy Division's "Closer" and Magazine's "Real Life", one of the foundational Manchester post-punk records. It gave us "Up the Down Escalator", "As High as You Can Go" and "Don't Fall".

Their best known song arrived later, though: "Swamp Thing", from the 1986 album "Strange Times". Together with "Second Skin", it defines the band's formula - layered guitars that do not play riffs so much as build space, and a voice that moves through them rather than sitting on top.

Boogaloo is a club whose capacity, for a band of this calibre, means a close crowd rather than a distant view from the stands. The Chameleons never broke into the mainstream, not even at their peak, but what they did leave behind is a whole generation of bands who were listening - and that is more than enough for one night in Zagreb.
