A Knife on a Boat Near Medulin: Macedonian Citizen Accused of the Attempted Murder of a Serb

Summer on the Adriatic, a boat near Medulin, two in the morning. Instead of a holiday - a knife, a blade swung at head and stomach, and a man who raised his hand to protect his vital organs. Instead of a tourist postcard from Istria, another story about how one incident can turn a night into an attempted murder.

The state prosecutor's office of the Pula district has opened an investigation against a 55-year-old citizen of Macedonia, suspected of trying to kill a 48-year-old Serbian citizen. According to the prosecution, on Monday, 13 July, the suspect swung a knife several times at the victim's head and stomach on a boat near Medulin, with intent to kill.

The 48-year-old raised his arm to defend the vital parts of his body. That is precisely why today we are talking about serious injuries to the arm, and not about something far worse. The attack was cut short after another man intervened and managed to wrest the knife away from the suspect - a man whose name is not mentioned, but whose reaction likely meant the difference between life and death.

Following the criminal complaint filed by the Pula police station, the prosecution questioned the suspect and issued a ruling to investigate for attempted murder. Detention was also proposed and ordered due to the risk of flight - the investigating judge of the county court in Pula accepted the motion.

What makes the story heavier is the context: two people from the region, on a foreign sea, in a season when thousands of our own people spend their summer on exactly that Croatian coast. What exactly set off the conflict on that boat - that is now for the Croatian justice system to decide. Until then all that remains is the scene: a knife, raised arms, and one more reminder that violence does not take a holiday.
