Instead of yet another coffee-table debate about potholes and scattered trash, a handful of Prilep residents grabbed brooms and paint and started fixing things themselves. The citizens' initiative „My Prilep" has been around for just a few days, yet it has already gathered over 1,000 followers and, more importantly, moved from words to action.
The results are visible and concrete. In the yard of the „Goce Delčev" kindergarten, the group repaired an old, worn-out slide, with materials and labor provided by donors. At the „Orde Čopela" dorm, a crew led by Ilija Angelski cleared overgrown vegetation and piled-up waste, and utility workers then hauled away the prepared material - the result: a completely transformed yard.
The initiative's message is simple and disarmingly honest: „enough coffee chitchat, it's time for action". No assemblies, no petitions, no political structures - people simply went out and worked, in cooperation with the public utility company. The next step is a mobile app through which citizens will be able to report problems, track public transport in real time, and submit their own initiatives.
It's easy to scoff at „just another Facebook group". But when institutions do little for years and citizens lift what's theirs on their own, the question isn't whether this will solve every problem - it's why it had to be the citizens who started. „My Prilep" isn't a replacement for the municipality; it's a quiet rebuke to it. And if one yard and one slide can be fixed in a few days through sheer will, what else has been stuck in line for decades?
