A hundred hours without a break. That is how long the running and walking festival "No Finish Line Skopje" lasts, hosted since yesterday by the municipality of Aerodrom. At the start in front of the Jane Sandanski sports centre, children, parents and residents gathered - and not one of them is running for a medal.
That is the whole point of the format. Every kilometre covered turns into help for the Kozle children's hospital. You can run, you can walk, the pace does not matter - what matters is that the counter runs for a hundred hours and that every step carries value.
The format is well designed precisely because it removes the barrier. A charity race usually asks a person to be in shape or to pay an entry fee. This event asks only that you show up and walk - which means an eight-year-old child, a parent with a pushchair and a man who has not run in decades all play the same role in the result.
Worth mentioning too is the second thing the event does: it keeps the name Kozle in the public arena. The children's hospital rarely appears in the news except when something is missing - a machine, a ward, money. A hundred hours of walking in front of Jane Sandanski is a different way to bring it up, and a better one than the annual cycle of appeals.
The municipality of Aerodrom says that for the next hundred hours this will be a place for sport, company and humanity. That is a phrase from a press release. The figure that will say more is the one published at the end - how many kilometres were covered and how much of that reached the hospital.
