Just 40 minutes by metro from Porto sits one of the best-preserved Portuguese coastal towns - Vila do Conde. Maritime, monastic, with an aqueduct running through preserved medieval lanes, and a Michelin-starred restaurant you wouldn't expect to find in a town this size.
Historically, the town is home to one of the most impressive Portuguese convents - Mosteiro de Santa Clara, founded by legend by Afonso Sanches and Teresa Martins. In 2024 the convent reopened as The Lince Santa Clara - a luxury hotel with 87 rooms, spa, and two top-tier restaurants. Together with the Santa Clara Aqueduct, the Igreja Matriz with its Manueline architecture, and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Socorro, the town is a living lesson in medieval Portugal.
Cuisine stands out for one specific thing: Oculto, an underground restaurant that earned its Michelin star in its very first year. The menu is tasting-style, inspired by the sea. Beyond that, the grandma side - convent sweets like "beijos de freira" (nun's kisses), representatives of traditional Portuguese recipes that have survived for centuries.
What makes Vila do Conde different from other tourist spots around Porto? It's still an active town, not a museum-town. Locals still handmake bobbin lace and build traditional ships with wooden techniques that have existed for centuries. There's a unique Chá Camélia tea plantation - one of the rare ones in Europe. And the museum of José Régio, the famous Portuguese writer.
If your next holiday is in northern Portugal, don't skip it - that would be a mistake. Vila do Conde is somewhere between "too small to be on the long list" and "too beautiful to stay completely unknown." The ideal balance. The metro from Porto carries you into a real past, without overstaging, without turbo-tourism, and with tea you can take home like a relic.
