An hour of waiting at Bogorodica. Thirty minutes at Tabanovce. At the other border crossings - no significant delays, either entering or leaving.

That is the picture of Macedonia's borders on Sunday morning, according to data from the Automobile and Motorcycle Association of Macedonia. And it is not a random Sunday - it is mid-August, when some are coming back from the coast and others are only now setting off.

Why it all funnels into one place

Look at that number from another angle. Of all the border crossings in the country, exactly one produces an hour-long wait. That one is the exit toward Greece.

It is not a Greek problem and it is not a Macedonian problem - it is geometry. When most of the summer traffic is heading the same way, it passes through the same barrier on the same few weekends. Bogorodica in August is not a border crossing, it is a funnel.

What is worth knowing before you get in the car is something else: the number changes by the hour. Early morning and late evening almost always move faster than the afternoon, because the whole family wants to leave after breakfast. An hour on Sunday morning does not mean an hour on Sunday at 2pm.

And inside the country - landslides

The second warning from the association has nothing to do with queues, which is why it gets skipped. Traffic on the state road network is running without major problems, the roads are dry and passable - but there is a risk of landslides when driving through basins, river valleys and gorges.

Four routes are named specifically: Katlanovo–Veles, Mavrovo–Debar–Struga, Vinica–Berovo and Kochani–Delchevo.

That is the list anyone driving toward Debar or through Kochani should read before setting off. A landslide does not require a storm - a rock heated all summer, expanding and contracting, is enough. Which is why the warning stands on a day with dry roads and a clear sky.

The association urges adjusted speed and respect for road signs, especially in conditions of heavier traffic. Standard wording. Except this time it comes attached to a concrete figure of one hour and to four named routes - and that is the difference between an appeal and information.
