The ensemble Cappella Mediterranea perform the musical drama „Amore siciliano” at the Church of the Assumption in Osor on August 18, 2026, starting at 9 pm. The conductor is Leonardo García Alarcón, and on stage are sopranos Ana Vieira Leite and Mariana Flores, countertenor Leo Fernique, tenor Valerio Contaldo and bass Matteo Bellotto.
Cappella Mediterranea is the ensemble the Swiss-Argentine conductor and harpsichordist Leonardo García Alarcón founded in 2005, specialising in baroque music and specifically in the Latin baroque: Italian, Spanish and Latin American. With over seventy concerts a year, the ensemble works through madrigal, polyphonic motets, oratorio and opera. It built its name by uncovering unknown works, among them „Il Diluvio universale” and „Nabucco” by Michelangelo Falvetti, but also with new readings of repertoire pillars such as Monteverdi's „Orfeo” and Bach's Mass in B minor.
„Amore siciliano” is a programme assembled from works by Roland de Lassus, Sigismondo d'India and Alessandro Scarlatti, who reworked anonymous tarantellas and laments full of fierceness, emotion and violence. Running through the whole drama is the story of Cecilia's misfortunes and her melancholic Calabrian melody, carrying the listener back to a southern Italy of three centuries ago. García Alarcón is today a sought-after name at the largest music and opera institutions, from the Paris Opera to the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Grand Théâtre in Geneva.
The Osor Music Evenings take place in a church on the island of Lošinj. For a baroque ensemble of this rank, a space with natural acoustics and no amplification is more an advantage than a limitation. Tickets are sold through entrio.hr.
