A dermatologist on the autumn skin "reset": a concept, not a medical need - treat summer's dark spots now, but protection lasts all year

October is the month when the beauty industry sells the "autumn reset": treatments and routines promising a face as good as new after the summer. Dr Carlos Morales Raya, a dermatologist specialising in lasers, aesthetic medicine and acne, and medical director of the clinic bearing his name in Madrid, lets some air out of the balloon. The reset makes sense "as a concept, not as a medical need", he says.

After summer the skin really does carry traces: more dark spots, uneven texture, dehydration, a dull complexion and signs of photoageing. Autumn, with less sun, is a good moment to reintroduce or step up certain active ingredients and treatments. But UV radiation, pollution and oxidative stress act twelve months a year. That is why, in his view, skin should be treated gradually all year round, not abruptly "repaired" in October.

What makes sense to do now

For the spots summer left behind, the choice depends on the type of pigmentation: picosecond laser, intense pulsed light or certain fractional lasers. For texture, pores, fine lines and acne scars, the options are chemical peels, fractional lasers, ablative or non-ablative, and fractional microneedling radiofrequency. For loose skin, collagen stimulation with microfocused ultrasound or radiofrequency delivers results gradually over the following months. Dull or dehydrated skin can get a gentle laser, a superficial peel or, where indicated, injections of low cross-linked hyaluronic acid or polynucleotides.

Retinol is not just for winter

Retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids and depigmenting agents can be introduced or stepped up gradually as the sun weakens. In summer they need more care, especially at higher concentrations or on skin that is not used to them. But retinol does not have to stop in summer: applied at night and with good sun protection, it can stay in the routine. Autumn is simply a more comfortable moment to start or to raise the strength in a controlled way. Skin with a damaged barrier benefits from ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, as well as richer textures when needed.

Cosmetologist Ana del Castillo agrees: skin gains more from a steady, tailored routine than from one concentrated effort. The basics are always the same - cleansing, hydration suited to the skin's needs and sun protection all year round. A more intensive treatment makes sense when there is a specific problem: spots, persistent dryness or changed skin tolerance. "There is no obligatory pressure from the calendar," she says, comparing skincare to brushing your teeth - every day, not once a year.

The dermatologist's message is simple: "You don't have to choose between an autumn reset and care all year round." Your skin does not know what month it is. How much money do we leave every season on promises written by the calendar, not by our skin?
