Derrick May comes to Barbarella on 15 August. The man who wrote "Strings of Life" will be playing records in a club on the Dalmatian coast, under open sky, until sunrise. If there is one night where the history of techno and the Croatian summer touch, this is it.

May is part of the Belleville Three - him, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins, three high-school kids from a Detroit suburb who turned drum machines and synthesisers into a genre. In 1987, under the name Rhythim Is Rhythim, he released "Strings of Life". The track became one of the anthems of the British rave explosion and is still considered a classic in both house and techno. A salsa groove, a fanfare keyboard, strings that cut through - a piece that sounds refined and ecstatic at the same time.

Bssayd opens the night with a techno set built specifically for the occasion, and the lineup also features DJ Jock, six times voted Croatia's best DJ, whose productions are regularly played by Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Joseph Capriati and Amelie Lens. Barbarella is a club with a serious reputation - Nina Kraviz and Octave One have both passed through it.

Doors are at 23:45 and the party runs until sunrise. Entry is over-18s only. Tickets run from around 105 to 1,340 denars via entrio.hr. The club sits in Prosika bay near Tisno, which means this night also takes some transport planning - something regulars at the Dalmatian festivals learned long ago.
